Years later, the Old Man in the Mountain fell. In a video interview, the son of the first caretaker stands before the debris field where the stones fell, describing the collapse as “a terrible death.” He said, “My heart was ripped out of my chest.”

I didn’t share his sadness. That face was tied to a memory of my grandfather. Even though he had died by the time the Old Man’s face fell, I was glad to see him crumble.

I returned recently to see the Old Man in the Mountain site with my family. It was winter and we got lost, turning around and around on the snowy mountain roads. We stopped at the ski museum to ask for help. Finally, I hopped out of the van and stared for a long time at the bald spot in the mountain face where the Old Man’s face once projected. I raised my arms to take a photo and my sister Tessie leaned her head out of the window. “Is this it?” she asked. “Why did we go to so much trouble to look for something that isn’t here?”
